A large portion of the reason, Jody, is that that part of the population seeing itself as a failure is looking for a scapegoat. Trump and the GOP point to the “other,” liberals and the government that supports them as their real problem. Thus Trump and the GOP leadership make their base feel good about themselves by giving them psychological cover.

As I have said many times: Men pray not so much for their daily bread as they do for their daily delusion, and Trump is an answer to their prayers, which only goes to benefit the Wall Street fat cats as a diversion to their national ripoff.
