Actually, Umair, we can fairly accurately measure the Thanatos / Eros divide in America by those supporting Trump and those opposing him. By this measurement roughly 60% of Americans would be in the Eros column and 40% the Thanatos. This I strongly suspect would be up dramatically to good compared to a hundred years ago.

What might make this baffling to some is that trends and counter trends are moving ever faster in opposite directions. Meaning that as things get better and better the negatives stick out far more pronouncedly.

For instance, nothing in this century so far remotely reaches the slaughter of the two World Wars of the proceeding century. Yet with just one political miscalculation or tiny technical glitch, WWIII can Trump everything destructive of past ages. In other words we are getting better-worse fast, and people sense this tension of growing potential obliteration.
