There is an unwritten law of the universe that says at some point in time creation must always be offset by destruction, stars are born and stars die — balance! This law is inescapable for all objects and creatures of the universe and most assuredly planet earth and its long line of living organism, large and small, including the evolutionary arrival of humankind

From our human perspective this law of balance is a most brutal reality, and something that our dogged sense of hope wants to look beyond.

As humankind developed over hundreds of thousands of years it has been racked by a machine-gun series of offset — famine, disease, war and other natural calamities, offsets that while they didn’t completely do us in, it was nevertheless a constance balancing check upon our growth and spread.

Over the last two or thee hundred years, however, the frequency of deaths among humanity has dropped off enormously as our technological advances in medicine. and the sciences in general, has erupted to magnificent heights. On the other hand the magnitude of our human offsets have grown exponentially as witnessed by the two world wars of the last century killing millions.

Most importantly during the last century we entered the nuclear age, whereby our very technological advances have provided the means for humankind’s final offset. Indeed, creation, as stated, must always be offset by destruction, and it would seem that our years of creation have finally caught up with us.

In past years, on more than one occasion, we have come within seconds of an all out nuclear ending of all advance forms of life on earth because of some minor technical flaw within our mutually assured destruction nuclear systems. If the total offset of humanity is not the result of some technical glitch then it inevitably will come about by some person or persons of diseased mind.

It would appear that our world is currently looking down the barrel of such sick mind in the person of Vladimir Putin, and is helpless to act. An enormous number, some say six thousand nuclear warheads, each at least a hundred times more power than those dropped on Japan in the middle of the last century are currently within his nervous grasp. This is enough firepower to eradicate humanity a hundred times over. But even if humanity finds some miraculous way of getting around Putin, it’s only a mater of dodging one life ending bullet after another until the final killer bullet arrives and the universal law of balance mets its destiny on a human scale.

The genie of our human offset is out of the bottle and there is no putting it back — only lucky delay remains our hope of avoiding the hell of universal balance at present.
