American Democracy At Donald Trump’s Direction Is Imploding And There Is Nothing To Be Done About It
Right now folks I have never been so mad and so depressed regarding American politics and the nation’s future. I feel a little bit like Martin Luther King. I’ve come to the mountaintop, only I don’t like what I see. In a few short years I see America no different than Russia and North Korea. They are Donald’s gold standard, and because of our foolishness that is what we shall rapidly become.
Donald J. Trump has quickly burned through a corrupted Republican Party and turned it into a weapon against democracy. One by one the institutions of America that have keep us free are being despoiled into the tyrant’s purpose, including the Senate Majority Leader and the Attorney General of the United States.
Trump has already bribed the super rich and their GOP shills to his cause with a “tax break” and they will continue to support him because of what more they expect to gain from him and because they fear him. His Republican henchmen, again with Russian help, will turn the nation’s electoral process (including the Electoral College) into a joke.
Trump has many things on his side. One of them is indifference. Millions of Americans are currently apathetic to the fact that our “president” is plowing through democratic norms. These are folks that have never given politics or history the slightest consideration. As such an evil history is about to devour them.
I have no doubt whatsoever that the American Constitution and all the good that it stood for will soon fall into a black hole from which there is no recovery. Trump has given Congress (what’s left of it) the finger and when it takes Trump’s refusal to cooperate with it to the courts, Trump will give the courts the finger as well. And who is going to stop Trump’s rampage through our democracy — no one.
Sure the nation’s major newspapers and new networks will attempt to put up a fight, but he will soon strong-arm them into submission.
If you think this little rant is way over the top, that a full-blown dictatorship is not possible in America, I hope you are right. But as I’m a dedicated student of history, I will say you would be dead wrong. In a few minutes, like Wally Coyote, you will look down and nothing will be under you.
Signing off for good,
James M. Ridgway, Jr.
