Counter to what people want to believe, hate, not love, is the most powerful unifying force of humanity. People instinctively, deep down understand this hard reality. They therefore fear that to go against hate is to make themselves vulnerable to being run over by it. That is why dictators make certain that their hatefulness comes though whatever thin veil of niceness they may project — as a means of intimidation.
