For good or evil this reaction by the many not so well off to the high life is called hope. Back in the depths of the depression down and out folks were flocking to movies depicting the lives of the rich and glamorous.

It all come back to the fact that the primitive base mind is mostly pure ego and ego is not rational; it is impractically emotional. It wants what it wants even when the desire is impossible to satisfy.
