The combination of over population, the human tribal impulse to hate the “other,” nuclear weapons, diminishing resources, the speed of technological change, global warming and perhaps the last straw to break the camel’s back, so to speak, the possibility of Trump and Putin facing off on the world stage is a witch’s brew for ending it all.
It is hard to say just how many years it has taken humankind to reach critical mass, but no doubt that after countless false arms the doomsday machine is finally now in full go mode.
Man’s technical creations currently rival that of God (if one is disposed to think in such magical traditions) with no end in sight except the very end. There is, indeed, one surefire universal law — whether or not one ascribes it to God — that will settle the issue permanently.
My old standby the universal law of probability balance, which states that at some point in time all creation must be offset by destruction, is unavoidable. Political and technical pressures are straining to be released. Ground zero of that cataclysmic release are all those nuclear tipped missiles in dark in-the- ground silos and beneath the waves stacked upright in submarines silently and patiently awaiting their universal mandate.
Fortunately for humankind’s sanity, and that which keeps nihilism at bay is that such a horrendous reality is safely snuggled in our relentless hopefulness. Of course hope is a two edged sword that keeps our minds secure while laying our bodies open to annihilation.
In any event, if you can sleep securely knowing that the Donald and Putin are lurking somewhere out there in that growing minefield of fatal mistakes, you are a better person than I (or is it me?)
And you thought the 2016 election in and of itself was a big deal.
Yes, this is a hard one to recommend.
