I have always hated math in the abstract. For me to appreciate math I need to understand its history. I need to know who and why a specific person developed a particular mathematical principle and what it lead to.

Of course for those blessed with strong cognitive ability and thus natural problem solving ability none of this is necessary to do well as far as coming up with the correct answer, though I doubt that they grasp its full importance.
