If Trump’s Xenophobic GOP Doesn’t Manage To Crush Our Democracy Or Cause Us To Be Vaporized In A Nuclear War….
Yes, my friends, if the worst fails to materialize then our embryonic multicultural democracy will likely rise up and overwhelm the short sighted, greedy forces of predatory capitalism. It all came to me as I was watching the latest episode of This Is Us — that glorified, but extremely well crafted, TV soap opera.
This wildly popular show portrays the flawed goodness of America’s emergence into a true multicultural democracy, a dream that our better angel founding fathers hoped would eventually come to pass, even though they knew such an aspiration would be an uphill battle against the rawest side of our base nature. But the inclusive will of Abraham Lincoln did manage to prevail over the divisive inclinations of Jefferson Davis. (See Apprentice Killers: The War of Lincoln and Davis, my book is being republished. Not sure yet when the new version will show up on Amazon. But I digress.)
Yes, America is changing for the better. While Trump and his political ilk are desperately trying to pull America back into its bad old ways of past centuries, this dynamism is being roundly countered by what can be seen as reflected in the flood of racial and ethnic diversity of the newest TV commercials and sitcoms. Indeed, despite a ruthless Trumpian world of pipe bombs and lies there is hope on the horizon.
Truth is that America always does best when everyone does better. Without a well-tended infrastructure that servers all the people, even some of the wealthiest among us get pulled under — see 1929 and 2008.
Part of the human problem has always been that the exploited often don’t hit back at their exploiters, but rather find some weaker party to relieve their fears and frustrations upon. Years back in the old South poor Whites demoralized by Dixiecrats lynched Negros; and once upon a time in Russian, people oppressed by the ruthless dictator Stalin railed against American capitalists. It is what I see as the kick the cat syndrome. Indeed, its when the boss unfairly berates you, but really needing the job, you don’t fire back at him. Instead, you go home and kick the cat to relieve your rage.
Today folks feeling victimized by forces they don’t understand are easily directed by Trump and his GOP predatory capitalist friends to take out their fears and anger on helpless Mexicans and minorities in general, thus not only shooting themselves in the foot but hurting innocent folks in the process.
Those wishing to renew America see this GOP/ Trump backward looking segment of the nation with horror. Women especially are determined to move forward into a new democracy for all. Much about the future direction of America will of course be revealed in the up and coming midterm election. It looks promising but the dictatorial prone, ugly side of the nation still has lots of cards to play, so we shall see. This may turn out to be the now or never time for testing whether or not a government by and for the people will not perish from the earth. Trump is bringing in reinforcements. He is calling Putin to Washington. We are approaching the shutout at high noon, folks — democracy vs. the dictators.
