In The End Bernie Sanders Proved To Be A Wonderful Small “d” Democrat

All his adult life Bernie Sander has fought for the ideals expressed in the American Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal, that government should represent all the people not just a privileged few.

He has carried on his fight with every fiber of his being. It was this purity of character — no pretense — that inspired the nation’s idealistic youth to rally to his cause. But in the end Bernie proved not to be a fanatic. Bernie understands that no matter how passionate one feels about one’s cause that real democracy depends on commonsense compromise.

Indeed, in terms of democratic ideals half a loaf is always preferable to nothing. Unfortunately for true fanatics half a loaf is degusting, even three quarter of a loaf or getting 99.9 % of what they see as right is unacceptable. The bottom line is that for the black and white, all or nothing, good and evil childish thinking of fanatics; they embody the archenemy of democracy.

And so for a few of Bernie’s most fanatical followers, no matter how much Secretary Clinton has moved toward Bernie’s principles it is never going to be enough. No matter how much they love Bernie, a part of them can never get beyond the feeling that by endorsing Clinton their hero has sold out. For them the ways of democracy are incomprehensible.

Bernie understands all of this and thus he has acted masterfully to both promote his ideals while preserving the spirit of democracy. A few may never get it, but in time most will. Thank you, Bernie Sanders.
