Judge Roy Moore And The God Thing
Why is it that devout charlatans and politicians pretending conscientious piety can get away with doing quite unsavory things and yet so easily receive a free pass from religious fundamentalists — right wing evangelical? The short answer is that simply by verbally supporting the God impulse of these fundamentalists their words trump anything unsavory that they may otherwise do.
Returning to the human ego as that which drives the survival instinct, belief in God is a key part of that instinct for those mostly devoid of countervailing intellectual objectivity. In other words for those whose ego need is to survive, not only in the flesh, but spiritually into some sort of heavenly eternity as well nothing else matters.
This is why judge Roy Moore of Alabama will most likely receive a free pass among his Alabama supporters for any transgression he may have committed as he is shielded by his notorious Bible thumping reputation among the faithful. It is also why an otherwise sleazy Donald Trump can say that even were he to shot someone in broad daylight in Time Square his supporters (particularly evangelical) would stick by him.
All that was required of Trump to gather such intense support was to sell the faithful on the idea that his Supreme Court appointment would support the interests of believers. In other words when reduced to its essence fundamentalist belief is nothing more than a primitive need to survive forever — ethics and morals be damned.
Judge Roy Moore is now the poster child for this religious sham.
