Mid Twentieth Century America was in many ways a giant anomaly. For a brief moment in time thousands of Americans had reasonably interesting and well paying jobs and the middle class spiked, but then the rest of the world recovered from the ravages of WWII and those glory days for average Americans melted away.

This created in America what Eric Hoffer would call in his 1951 gem of a book, The True Believer, the new poor, a very restless and dangerous group — Trumpers as it turned out.
