Much of this negative comparison and anger in the US goes back to the fact of the sudden expansion of the American middle class in the middle of the last century that in reality was an unsustainable anomaly due to factors created by WWII. The collapse of this unnatural middle class then inspired what social writer Eric Hoffer long ago termed the “New Poor.” And it was this frustrated new poor whom Trump exploited barely enough to become president.
