Nature has a very simple and direct method for dealing with these sorts of problems beyond what we think of as morals. It is called ego. Ego is one’s primary defense mechanism. Ego’s job is to see to the survival of you and your direct offspring at all costs.

Of course as part of that survival impulse, ego also seeks advantage at every opportunity. Naturally as adults we try to hide this desire to seek advantage to some degree so as not to appear a spoiled brat or egomaniac. You can see with children, and some adults, that they have not yet mastered the art of concealing their ego aggression.

Probably why so many folks love sports is because it is one area in which it is socially permissible for both the spectator and the player to let their ego aggression run wild within certain rules.

Likely one of the reasons that we have seen politics and public intercourse become so aggressive in recent years is that population overcrowding in conjunction with global warming and the threat of nuclear annihilation and terrorism is severely pressuring humanity’s collective ego impulse.
