Politicians need to lead not follow the polls. When the founding fathers decided to form a rather unique style of government they didn’t run around the country taking surveys about who was conservative, centrist or liberal.

They said here are a set of priciples that we would like to build a country around. Now of course they realized that both they and the people of the various states at the time were far below the ideals they professed. But they shot high anyway, hoping that they and the young nation would eventually catch up to their stated ideals.

Now the question has always been are we as a nation going to continued to strive for those ideal or slide back entirely into a nation run by and for the powerful as was every other nation’s way before America came into being?

The bottom line is that the Democratic Party, far more than the Republican Party in recent years, has continued to struggle toward the founding fathers ideals. It is in this area of continuing to press toward those ideals that President Trump is so poorly equipped, as well as being an existential threat to all of humanity.
