Preachers, salesmen and politicians all grove on selling the same product — fuzzy hope, in which truths, facts and policies are very secondary considerations. This is another prime example of where man’s emotionally driven ego trumps (ha! ha!) intellect.
It therefore should not be of any great surprise that America’s supreme BS salesman and reality television star has run away with the nation’s anti-intellectual know-nothings. The only terrifying question is what is the magnitude of said segment of the total electorate?
In the last century, Russia, Italy and Germany succumbed badly to an emotionally vulnerable citizenry. Will America’s democratic institutions hold up against potential despotism? Or has the super wealthy, corporate class so abused average citizens that it has greased the skids for a full blown dictatorship, as political and other national institutions begin to crack?
But one thing is for certain. America is going to be bombarded by a rash of fuzzy hope by the likes of Trump, Cruz and Clinton, turning the electorate into a roiling mass of anger and frustration, because one man’s idea of hope is another’s prescription for depravity.
