Since the human default position is to seek perceived advantage at every opportunity (Republicans are currently the masters at exploiting sometimes subtle background xenophobia in otherwise nice White folks let alone overt xenophobes), holding off authoritarianism in a multicultural society will be a never ending struggle, and at some point, as in the past, that struggle is going to be lost to either parts of the nation or to the entire nation.
