Thanks for the thoughtful reply, Joel. The sad truth is that in large party Trump is the negative backlash to Obama, a hardwired White tribal thing. Republicans and the White ruling class have figured out how to finesse and cheat our democratic system in order to hold onto power at any cost, Trump being a very dangerous cost.

Still, three million more American voted the other way. Unfortunately the Electoral College is an anti democratic contrivance that has served its purpose well if one is a member of the majority tribe.
