The Accidental know-nothing Presidency Of Donald J. Trump
Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by a whopping 2.6 million votes, a larger plurality than most American presidents ever received. Trump, however, won the key battleground states by a slim edge, giving him a comfortable margin of victory in the Electoral College.
This came about because too many Democrats engaged in protest voting. Instead of voting for one, who in their minds was the lesser of two evils, they either voted for a third party candidate or they voted for Trump as a protest vote, secure in the belief that Hillary could not possibly lose. In other words a large segment of Democrats played with fire and got burnt because they did not consider the possible effects of the Electoral College, or they simply could not bring themselves to vote for the lessor of two evils, always a big mistake in politics.
Now America is saddled with a lazy egomaniac for its president, a man who has no interest in governance. He simply intends to wallow in the trappings of the presidency. Vice President elect Pence understands this, and it is precisely why he said that he intends to use vice President Dick Cheney as his model of how he will function as vice president. Meaning of course that during George Bush’s first term Cheney was the real functioning power behind the throne.
So while Trump tweets red meat to the faithful and tells them that he loves them, Pence and his team will devise policies and legislation that will be anything but beneficial to Trump’s working-class supporters.
In other words the flimflam man, Trump, will do what he does best. He will continue to hustle the gullible, and that will be easy because large chucks of his most devoted fans devourer conspiracy theories and fake news as gospel reality, or they are just plain uninformed. For instance 39% of Trump backers don’t believe that the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose during President Obama’s time in office, while in fact it rose a whopping 11,000 points, or that the massacre at Sandy Hook was real — just some hoax to help institute gun control measures.
Trump voters don’t care about facts they simply want someone who says that they care about them. No doubt that Trump will carry that off quite well, along will hinting about how much he hates those “others” and how “terrific” he is making the country better for them. When it was said that men pray not so much for their daily bread as they do for their daily delusion, they had in mind Trump’s true believer champions.
So now starting in January what passes for the Trump administration and a reality TV circus will stumble forward to what scary end no one knows.
