The basic ego whose primary mandate is to have us seek advantage and survive at all cost is at best a very primitive system. So for those folks with a weak intellect needed to keep the ego in check, they often panick when threaten and attack the wrong causes in all the wrong ways. It’s what allows extremist to stir up war and gives would be dictators the opening for a power grab.
