The battle is really between ego and intellect. All creatures, pushed on by ego, are naturally egocentric. Ego is the most basic, primitive part of the mind that says I’m too important to die. I am God’s special creation above all others. It is from where superstition, faith, hope and religion arise — the home of the tribal impulse to fear and hate the “other.” Indeed, ego pushes us to want to live forever and to seek advantage by any means possible.
Intellect on the other hand is that curious part of the mind that is devorced from self-interest. Some folks, like our president, are nearly devoid of intellect. An enhanced intellect allows one to rise above the negative aspects of the ego. It is this enhanced intellect that primitive types hate most about liberals. They see those of advanced intellect as being above it all, which is exactly what intellect is about —the seeking of unvarnished truth no matter what.
