The end of the world was preordained, not because of some mystical, religious nonsense, but rather because that is the way the universe has always worked and will alway work.

From stars to humans and every other entity in existence, creation has always been offset by destruction--BALAMNCE. Indeed, at least when it comes to humankind, the seeds of our destruction are buit into the very fiber of our creativity.

Sure it took tens of thousands of years for our creativity to reach a level whereby total annihilation is possible, but we have been there for quite some time.

Yes, we have been living on borrowed time, since the 1950s, but the flaws of human nature are now bursting at the seams more than is remotely containable. The law of universally balance must be satified, and it is tugging on Putin's sleeve.
