The most powerful law of the universe is unwritten. It is what I call probability balance. That is to say that creation and good are always offset at some point in time by destruction and bad. Stars are born and stars die. In human terms peace is always offset by war and love by hate.
Seeing how this law is indifferent to the needs of humankind (equally good and bad — balance) what difference should it make to us if there is some guiding intelligence to these laws of the universe? We are just so much meaningless cannon fodder in the grand scheme of things. It is only our hardwired base ego that drives us to feel somehow special rather than an infinitesimal speck of dust in the cosmos.
Apprentice Killers: The War of Lincoln and Davis — a great read of another dangerous period for America. Check it out.
