The other factor that I found fascinating, though perhaps not quite what was intended, was that on the road to becoming a Cardinal and perhaps pope, a man becomes pretty sophisticated. Meaning of course that the higher up the chain of command of the Catholic church one travels the greater grows the doubt that God actually exists. It all kind of morphs into an ego power game — much the same sort of politics as played in the secular world.
