The Steve Schmidt Flaw
For those of you who don’t know of Steve Schmidt he was the campaign manager for Senator John McCain when the Senator ran for President against Barack Obama in 2008. He is the one who thought that McCain’s campaign needed a “game changer” so he recruited Sara Palin, the colorful governor of Alaska, to be McCain’s running mate, a move that stand up guy Schmidt quickly came to regret, as she turned out to be an informational challenged airhead.
Now as far as I’m concerned there is no one who loves and supports American ideals more that Steve, and I don’t mean that as one of these flag-waving, phony patriots. He’s all about truth, and he knows his American history. In fact, as a Republican conservative, as soon as it became apparent that Donald Trump had turned the GOP in to a Trump circus act, he dropped out of Republican politics, as did so many other men of integrity.
Today, you can often see Steve as a panelist on CNBC, being a staunch critic of Trump’s and the GOP’s xenophobic policies and tactics. Now I love Steve and would be thrilled to see the Democrats use his political expertise, but Steve does have one fundamental flaw — conservatism.
I was listening the other day to his brand new podcast, where he and his co-host were mystified to know how traditional movement Republican conservatism ran off the rails. It never occurred to them that in an ever-faster changing world, conservatism by its very definition of holding firm to traditional ways puts itself forever behind the curve of history. Indeed, traditional conservatism is a quaint notion that has no place within each new radically altered generation. I think at some level Steve understands this, but old habits of the mind are hard to break.
Ghosts of traditional Republicans are still milling around the seats of power in Washington, but now they are forced to do the bidding of Trump’s army, at least until they are completely shoved into their political graves. They have no purpose of their own accept holding on to personal power for as long as they can.
Stevie Boy, if you are reading this, you need to make a total reassessment of your political beliefs so that you may use your awesomeness to help save our republic.
