The way I see it, ethnic nationalism (basically our primitive tribal impulse) is what is wired into the base ego foundation of our mind. It is unfortunately the default impulse. Conversely civic nationalism springs from the intellect, our higher but more fragile advanced mindset that can easily be run over when the emotional ego of minds is on a rampage.
