There Is No Bright Line Marking The Point At Which The GOP Abandoned American Democracy
Could it have been when democratic Presidents Truman, Kennedy and Johnson took up the cause of civil rights and Republicans started dog whistling bigoted White voters?
Could it have been when the political bomb thrower Newt Gingrich became Speaker of the House?
Could it have been when Fox News materialized to make common cause with the Republican Party?
Could it have been when the GOP made it a first priority to gerrymander Congressional districts so that a minority of voters might usurp the will of the majority of Americans?
Could it have been when GOP state legislators began passing voter suppression laws, voiding hundreds of thousands of democratic voters.
Or, finally, could it have been when most Republicans sided with Putin’s Russia to shield Trump’s traitorous activities.
No, there is no bright line. Rather it was a bit-by-bit process whereby the GOP worked its way into such a terrible position that it now finds itself abetting Russia’s campaign to destroy American democracy.
Moreover we are witness to the irony whereby a GOP demagogic commie hunter, Senator Joesph McCarthy, has been replaced many years later by a GOP demagogic commie sympathizer, Congressman Jim Jordan. Boy, how times have changed in Trump’s Republican Party.
