There is no mystery why people react the why they do. People inherently want to think the best of their country. That, too, is part of the tribal impulse. No one wants to believe that they are part of an evil empire. Therefore our base ego rationalizes as best it can. Fascists count on and are experts at manipulating the mobs base ego for evil. Like it is said, the mob is where the conscience goes to rest.
