This is an excellent article, Chris. Yes, the brain is wired for people to align themselves by commonality — race, region, language etc — on one hand and on the other hand to show hostility to the “other.”

This makes governance particularly difficult to hold it together in a pluralistic, liberal democracy like that attempted in the US. Gridlock is a sure sign that things are not going well in our unnatural connivance of government.
