Democracy is a fragile and unnatural form of governance, and if you’re not a particularly successful person it can also be a particularly painful experience. The promise of democracy is that it allows one the freedom to take one’s life as far as one’s talents are capable of taking one, and therein lays the rub — there is no psychological cover for failure.
At least in a dictatorship one of meager success can always fall back on the rationalization that one lives in a system of limited opportunity. Thus one’s ego is protected. With ego being at the core of human existence, men like Mussolini, Hitler and Trump can present a fatal attraction to the unexceptional masses yearning for emotional cover for their ho-hum lives.
Therefore freedom hating Tea Party types, counter to all their disinformation ramblings about democracy and the sacred American Constitution, can’t wait to get to Washington in order to gridlock the democracy’s need for compromise. It is one of the primary ways in which the skids of a free society are greased for a strongman dictatorship.
Either Trump instinctively understands the siren call of the dictator or else he is Machiavellian shrewd. Either way he knows that playing to the right constituency of egos has always been the winning ticket to power — meaning that the doubts and fears of the humble masses are an eternal means to a political end for a slick salesman like the Donald.
It is telling that more and more Republicans are so hungry for victory in November that they are willing to sell their souls to the Trump Devil. Just Remember, GOP, in the end the Devil will collect his do.
