Trump, the GOP and the right wing media have convinced rural voters that life ia a binary proposition. Meaning in this case that if Democrats push for fairness to minorities then they must therefore be against rural Whites.

And, alas, the Republicans have nature's primitive tribal impulse reinforcing this notion.
