We humans have many naturally derived impulses. Some of them are in sort of a conflict. There is the collectivist impulse to work together for the common good, the socialist impulse. And then there is the impulse to go one's one way, the egocentric impulse. This is often reflected in the capitalist economic system, maximum competition.
Democratic societies that strike an even balance of these two impulses seem to work best. Of course right now the United states is way out of balance with the capitalist impulse having gone to a full predatory version of this individualist impulse.
