Well a lot of the small boats were used to ferry troops out to larger military craft in deeper water. But it should not have been a difficult task for the movie production crew, via digital means, to create the illusion of hundreds of boats pulling off the seemingly impossible. And so, without that grand illusion of furious civilian marine activity in and around the beach, the movie lost the crucial scope of its central purpose.
