Well poverty is the superficial reason for sure, or rather the poverty of the new poor. In modern societies when the once middle class — not all that far away removed from the good times — takes an economic hit it is easy for demagogues to trigger the negative offset of the tribal impulse for all sorts of vicious fascist outcomes within the fallen.

Indeed, the collapse of a freakishly high living standard of a broad middle class of the last century set up a lot of folks for massive anger when the economic social pyramid returned to its normal dimensions of a few super wealthy at the top and lots of poverty below them. Welcome back to the traditional normal.
