What you seem to miss in all this negative analysis is that for every trend there is aways a contertrend. When Obama was elected and then there was gay marriage, the consensus feeling was that everything was going to be up forever. Meanwhile, there was a solid block of bigots waiting for a Trump to lead them into hell.

Then with the election of Devil Trump we got the start of a reverse trend from that God awful mess with the huge women’s march. Moreover already running against the strongman trend is sudden massive protests in China and Russia and the midterm smack down of Trumpism. Bottom line is that positive and negative trends will go on cycling as usual until the final down trend.
