Women born before the 1970s, and I stress not all women, tended to be afflicted with what I call the Virgin Mary complex — nice women aren’t suppose to enjoy sex. The not so subtle social message was that sex was just a messy way to gain a family and a necessary evil for women to placate horny husbands.

A history of deadly childbirths and anti sexual church teachings and no pill took a bite of time to fade away even after the pill was introduced. Women of old had but two choices. They could either be good girls and thus be given the opportunity to call the loose women whores, or do the no, no and be called a whore themselves. Once they were committed to one side or the other it was almost impossible to change sides.

Of course sophisticated, upscale women paid little heed to such social norms, and discreetly managed to enjoy their bodies without damaging their reputations. They were wonderful.
