Yes, Ben Franklin was the man — editor, inventor, scholar, philosopher, diplomat, lover, scientist. The thing was, however, that the American Revolution for France was a minor sideshow in the war with its super power rival, England. By knocking England out of its entanglement with America, France actually may have hurt its own cause, because then England could throw all it had against France, even if America was just a costly diversion at most.
