Yes, I have written extensively on that most powerful tribal impulse of like kind to band together and fear the “other.” But this does not discount that society also has a tendency to punch down not up, fearing more those others rising up to overtake them far more that those who are already above them. In the South poor Whites exploited by Dixiecrats lynched backs. It’s a subtle variation of the basic tribal impulse.
