Yes, Michael, the world has been living on borrowed time since the late sixties. The nuclear gun of total human destruction has been cocked ever since, just waiting for some political miscalculation or tiny technical glitch to set off thousands of nuclear tipped missiles like a string of Chinese firecrackers. Yes, global warming is underway, but in a blink of an eye an inevitable nuclear holocaust can make that phenomenon meaningless.

Perhaps more people than we realize understand this, and since there is seemingly nothing of consequence that can be done about, burying our head in the sand on that account fits the situation.
