Yes, sports is usually one area where it is safe to exhibit our tribal egocentricity. In politics that type of response can be disastrous. You know the examples — Hitler, Stalin and Trump, just to name a few biggies.

The GOP has depended upon playing to those unable to rise above their hardwired tribal impulses ever since the Democrats backed civil rights and the demographics started favoring non Whites. The lower order Republican started to say the heck with democracy (the better ones are leaving or have left the party or are dying), just win baby win. We love gerrymandering and voter suppression rules.
