Yes, Tom, there is always a halfway chance that humanity survives a limited nuclear war. Say, India and Pakistan go full at with nukes. The fallout from that might only do in a third of the world’s population over a 20 year period. Still, I doubt that many remaining nuclear powers would give up their weapons.

Yes, that after life thing, another example of desperate hope run wild. But its all some have.
